26 Inkster students earn early diplomas
Twenty-six St. Norbert High School juniors received high school diplomas this week after 6 hours of government classes this summer.
Commencement exercises were held in St. Norbert Church, Inkster, and the Rev. Thomas VanAntwerp, pastor of St. Norbert's conferred the diplomas.
The summer "senior year" was offered to the 49 juniors [of] St. Norbert's shared-time program with Cherry Hill High School. The option came when insufficient funds forced cancellation of the pioneer program for next year [1972].
"The juniors had all the necessary credits to graduate but lacked a government course," Sister Barbara Mary, St. Norbert's High School principal said.
"So we offered a six-week two hour a day course and 26 students responded."
The remaining 23 juniors in the program will attend high schools in the Westwood, Cherry Hill, and Inkster school district next month as seniors.
The shared-time program at Cherry Hill and St. Norbert high schools began in 1963, the first such arrangement on a total basis in the state.
Religion and humanities are taught at St. Norbert's and math, science, art, physical education, homemaking, music and shop are taught at Cherry Hill.
