Detailed School Year Summaries, 1958 - 1961

Early in Sept. of 1958 we returned to school for our third year. We were assigned to room 12, grade 5, and Sister Marietta was our teacher. We welcomed a few new classmates Susan Seale, Sharon Swistock and Ronald Lackey. It was at that time, Oct. 28, 1958 that Cardinal Mooney died in Rome. We had the privilege of paying our last respects to him on Oct. 30 when we went to Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. On Jan. 4, 1959 we heard many unusual noises - it was the starting of the second wing of the school. In mid-June we ended another very exciting school year. A few days later, we were informed that Father Kienzel was going to leave our parish.

In Sept., 1959 we were in the sixth grade in room 2 with Miss Kenny as our teacher. This year, some new classmates were Christina Kowalczewski, Nash Antonio and Rocco Yacobelli. On May 1 of that year, Sister Clare Cecile organized a procession in honor of our Blessed Mother. June 6, 1960 we ended our fourth year at St. Norbert's.

An unforgettable day was Sept. 6, 1960 when we met husky Mr. Donohue, our homeroom teacher. Again we find ourselves in good old room 2. We found some new members in our class, Sandra Brittain, Margaret Parnis, Allen Jarembo, Edward West, and Lee Weiss. This was the first year of the basketball team. Besides this we enjoyed many other activities such as: writing ADF paragraphs, Hot Dog Sales, and a Christmas Bazaar. On May 10 Father Child took Safety Boys, Alter Boys, and Eight grade boys to Tiger Stadium for a baseball game. The first week of June we gave a breakfast for the graduating class. on graduation night, we also formed a guard of honor for them. In early June, we finished our fifth year at St. Norbert's.

It came to pass on Sept. 7, 1961 we, the eighth graders, became the second graduating class of St. Norbert's. This year, Susan Seale re-joined us after a two year's absence. Gerald Westphal and Margaret Konopka also joined us. Sister John Christine, who taught us in fourth grade was there to greet us. Sister was assigned to teach Religion, English, Health, Art and Reading. Mr. Asam was supposed to teach us but became ill and was replaced by Mrs. Corbin who taught us Arithmetic, Spelling, History and Science. On Sept. 27, Father Graven was transferred to St. John's in Ypsilanti. Father Majeske arrived Sept. 28 and was greeted with a play by our school on Sept. 29. We hadn't gone to Mass on school days because of the remodeling of the church. In Sept. we flew a green flag because of our safety record. On Oct. 1 we played our first football game. On Christmas day we were able to hear Mass in our remodeled Church. The Boy's Choir was started under the leadership of Father Majeske and made its appearance on Christmas night. We were fortunate to hear Mass as a group beginning in Jan. and were surprised to see so many fabulous changes. The bells signalled us when Mass was to begin and also reminded us to say the Angelus. The oriental rug beautified the Alter, not to say how beautiful the stained glass made it. The new organ with three speakers spreads the music through the spacious Church. The gates at the Alter were replaced by a long velvet rope with a gold cross. The new confessionals made it easier to go to confession. Another new section in the Church is the Baptistry. The choir loft also made the Church fuller with musical notes and sounds. The new Stations added to our devotions, especially during Lent. The new Social Hall in back of the Church is used as an all-purpose and all-occasion room. On Jan. 9, we took the High School Placement Test. Before Lent room 1 had ransomed 22 pagan babies, and had a total of $176.00. On Holy Thursday Father Majeske purchased a new Tabernacle and matching candlesticks which completed and made perfect our Earthly Home for our God and King. When we returned from our Easter vacation, Sister Clare Cecile had worked on a demerit system which was put into effect the first day. During the month of April the boys entered the Thunderbird Styling Contest. This is also the month for vocations, during which we received special vocation talks. Father Majeske had also started another project to beautify the grounds by planting shrubbery and re-seeding necessary spots and by fixing our blacktop. In the ADF paragraph writing contest the winners were Carol Majka and Edward West. Preliminary ribbons and pins were passed out to all who have achieved the requirements. On May 22, Father Child took the eighth grade boys to Camp Dearborn and the girls were able to enjoy a party in our Social Hall. June 7 at 7:30, we will graduate from St. Norbert's School and take another step into life.
